By the time Collins began making records for Pointblank, the funk side of his identity had begun to take over, but on COLD SNAP all the elements are balanced just right. Unlike some blues records, this one isn't held back by unimaginative material, and the killer band pulls particularly inspired performances from Albert, on both vocals and guitar. Icebreakers bassist Johnny B. Gayden and drummer Morris Jennings lay down a solid and varied set of grooves, and the Uptown Horns lend the arrangements shape and colour, framing Collins' hip, humorous, dead-on vocals and razor-sharp solos. "Lights Are On But Nobody's Home" is the inexorable, smokin', slow blues cut; "A Good Fool" and "I Ain't Drunk", the good-time shuffles; "Cash Talkin'" reprises the wry money woes of an earlier tune, "Mastercharge", and "Too Many Dirty Dishes", the album's other slow blues, features a classic Collins story interlude complete with sound effects wrung from the guitarist's straightforward Telecaster rig. Jazz master Jimmy McGriff sits in on Hammond organ and Mel Brown holds down the rhythm guitar slot.Less
